How to become a tutor:

  1. Complete the form on this page.
  2. When we contact you, we will send you a link to schedule your new tutor orientation (30 minutes).
  3. Complete the Literacy New York new tutor training. This self-paced training takes 3.5 to 4 hours to complete and is at no cost to you.
  4. Complete the post tutor training (30 minutes).
  5. Get matched with an adult learner.

Throughout the year we offer additional trainings, including sessions on our curriculum. The Adult Learning Alliance also offers a variety of learning opportunities on a regular basis that we pass along to our tutors.

Tutor Expectations*:

  • Consistency – This is life changing for our adult learners, so it is important that tutoring sessions happen on a consistent and regular schedule. Things happen in life, so be sure to let us, or your learner, know if you are not able to make a class.
  • Commitment – This is not a life-long relationship, but it is important that you are committed to this work when you begin it.
  • Clarity – Brene Brown says “Clarity is Kind.” We ask that you be clear and concise with your adult learner so they have a clear understanding of your expectations.
  • Communication – Stay in touch with your student and the office. Let us know if you are having issues with your matched learner. We are here to help! We want to know the good stuff too, so tell us that!

*We have the same expectations of our students.
