About Literacy Council
of Western Arkansas

Our Story

Our mission is to promote literacy and improve quality of life for adult learners in our community through basic education and personalized instruction.

The Literacy Council of Western Arkansas was formally established in 1985, although anecdotally it is the second oldest literacy council in Arkansas.
For more than 40 years, LCOWA volunteers and staff have worked to help adults in Sebastian County grow their literacy skills.

Nationally, 1 in 5 adults are considered low-literate. This means they can typically read basic sight words and simple sentences But, they cannot compare and contrast information, nor read a complex paragraph and summarize it. In Sebastian County, this number is 1 in 4, or some 25,000 adults.

Life hinges on literacy. It impacts every aspect of our lives – job opportunities, health disparities, civic participation, navigating the legal system, financial literacy, and the education of our children. All of these fundamentally important components of life are based on our ability to decode and dissect words and numbers.

Why Literacy Matters

Through one to one tutoring with trained volunteers, LCOWA works with adults looking for help with Adult Basic Education (ABE) – math and language; English as a Second Language (ESL); passing a certification exam; digital/financial literacy; and more.

Our goal is to meet learners where they are – physically and academically. Our office hours are limited, our learners and tutors meet in a location that is convenient for them – the public library, adult education center, a church, etc.
